Questions

Here you will find some helpful answers to some frequent questions

  • What are shifts like?

    • A typical shift is 4 hours in length, although that can vary from department to department.

  • Is there a way to prefer one over the other?

    • Yes, when a potential volunteer completes the online application, they may indicate a preference for a certain position.  Additionally, during the General Volunteer Orientation session, we chat about their preferred opportunity and with whom they will be working. 

  • How long is my break? 

    •  During a 4 hour shift, the breaks are generally a half hour. 

  • Where do employees park? ​

    • At Union Terminal:  Employees and volunteers may park in either visitor lot in front of the building, behind the green line (in front of the green line is reserved for visitors).  They will use a parking card (which they receive at the orientation session) for free admittance.  They may also park in either the North or South Employee/Volunteer lot, located towards the rear of the building. At the Geier Collections & Research Center:  Employees and volunteers may park in the Geier Center lot, located on W. 5th St. or on the street. 

  • Where should I go to start my first day?

    • Museum Ambassador (MAP) and Track volunteers:  Upon arrival, check-in with the COD (Coordinator on Duty) in the Children’s Museum, near the 1st Aid Room. Featured Exhibits volunteers:  Proceed to the exhibit and check in with the Manager of the Day. Collections & Research, Office, and behind-the-scenes volunteers:  A department staff member will contact you prior to your first day to arrange a meeting location.  Typically, this may be near the information desk (kiosk) in the Rotunda at Union Terminal or in the foyer at Geier Center.
